Notes of lectures on the theory and practice of medicine : delivered at the London University, session 1833.4 by John Elliotson, M.D. 1833.

Lecture notes, probably taken by James Barron Shaw M.D., whose name is pencilled in at end, on p. 252. The notes are mostly contained on p. 1-252, with the remainder of the pages blank, except for p. 255, which has a few miscellaneous annotations. The notes are tightly packed, with each page averaging about 30 lines of handwriting. The notes show signs of good organization and a high degree of neatness: new lecture topics often start at the tops of pages, and subheadings, such as "cause", "treatment", "pathology", etc., are underlined and set off as new paragraphs. Therefore, it is probable that this volume is a transcription from the note-taker's original notes. For the most part, the subject matter of the lectures covers physical disease, cause and treatment, but there is also a brief section on insanity (p. 117-129), which suggests moral and humane treatment.
